The Wolf Eyes Sniper 260 LED Tactical Torch is a compact high intensity LED tactical torch with 4 output levels including disorientating strobe and huge 260 lumen high beam. It comes complete with rechargeable battery and Australian charger.
Light Output
The Wolf Eyes Sniper 260 LED Tactical Torch has four light levels:
High beam of 260 lumens running for 2 hours 20 minutes with 2 hrs regulated (non dimming)
Medium beam runs for 9+ hours
Low beam runs for 90+ hours
The Wolf Eyes Sniper 260 series features a bright 260 lumen disorientating strobe output strong enough to temporarily disorient or disrupt an individual’s night vision, perfect for self defence use or as a non lethal tool for police officers or other officers of the law. It is similar to the preflashes before a camera flash, but lasts much longer.
The brightness level is brighter than the light output of the standard black baton like lights (Maglite) used in the past by many Police Forces in Australia. The Wolf Eyes Sniper 260 LED Tactical Torch has brighter spill light, as evidenced in the photos below. The difference is Wolf Eyes Snipers are pre focussed, meaning they are always in focus irrespective of whether they are aimed 2 metres or 50 metres away. There are no annoying black holes in the beam either.
The low level is perfect for writing by, putting out a similar amount of light to a popular 2 x AA cell light. The high output of this tactical flashlight make it useful for many uses such as vehicle searches through tinted windows and is a favourite of Police Officers who do a lot of traffic stops.
David and Goliath comparison shots below where we compare the light output of 6D Maglite at 1,380 g and 500 mm in length against the Sniper 260 LED tactical torch at 150 g and 130 mm in length. Also tested is the Surefire 6P. The target is a 1.8 m high man at 25 metres. Note the amount of light provided behind the sandstone hut by the Sniper 260 and also the amount of spill on the grass in front provided by the Sniper 260. Not immediately obvious is the pre focussed beam which means none of the annoying black spots in your beam.

We recently have been dealing with a number of Police Commuter Crime Units around the country.It was surprising to learn of the variety of their duties which include among other duties chasing offenders down railway lines and through tunnels. To this end they need a torch to signal trains to stop, which take 601 metres from full speed, a surprising amount. Here is a photo of a Defender 260 LED tactical flashlight (the same torch as the Sniper 260 LED tactical flashlight but with a different bezel [head] otherwise identical) taken over approximately 660 metres, with the torch facing at us, the reverse of how we normally test torches. We wouldn't be so bold to say our torches can stop a speeding locomotive, but here is the photo:
Beam Pattern
The beam of the Sniper 260 is designed for fast target acquisition. To this end it has a bright hotspot surrounded by spill light. This means you can aim the hotspot at your target, if your target moves they are still within your beam, you only have to move your light directly onto them, rather than searching in the darkness with a pencil beam. The Sniper 260 is pre-focussed between 0 - 100 metres, as focussing takes valuable time and of course if a torch is focussed for 15 metres it will not be in focus at 100 metres. The photo below was taken 1 metre away from a white wall, you will notice the perfect beam which is just as suitable for searching for fingerprints on smooth surfaces or looking for offenders in shrubs. The wide spill or flood at the same time as the spot keeps this unit as a favourite with Police who have to chase offenders.
Construction
The Wolf Eyes Sniper 260 LED Tactical Torch has an incredibly rugged construction, probably unlike most other torches or flashlights commonly used in Australia in police or military work. We recently compared the wall thickness to a consumer torch, the Led Lenser P7 and found the walls were DOUBLE the thickness in the Sniper!
Constructed of aircraft grade aluminium with a brass liner, the Sniper is designed to have a 25.4mm (1") diameter body, making it both easy to hold and easy to mount, 1" being the standard firearm mounting size. We have never had a Sniper body suffer a catastrophic failure (Edit: excluding the torch dropped in tank treads, but not many torches can stop a tank!). The Sniper 260 is a high output torch with modest size. Most people don't realise that LEDs put out considerable heat, but unlike an incandescent torch which projects the heat out the front, LEDs heat the base they are mounted on. Overheating an LED results in permanent damage and reduced light output for the life of the LED. To remove the possibility of damage to your LED, Wolf Eyes have a brass liner inside the torch and a substantial aircraft aluminium body. The brass liner, as well as maintaining high electrical conductivity, mates to the mount of the LED and conducts heat along the body of the torch or flashlight, using the mass of the body as a heatsink to dissapate the heat.
All Wolf Eyes Snipers are anodised tactical black and have a 5 Year Warranty on the body.
Upgradeable
The Wolf Eyes Sniper and Defender range of torches are upgradeable to a brighter LED when they come out. Unlike older design torches and flashlights, the Wolf Eyes modular design allows replacement of the LED when a brighter unit (or different wavelength such as red, green or infra red, etc) is available. We have regularly upgraded 100 lumen, 130 lumen and 170 lumen models up to a higher level and expect to be doing the same to 260 lumen units in years to come. We have installed many coloured and IR LEDs in existing torches. The extremely durable construction of Wolf Eyes mean they last for years, reassuringly upgrades are available to keep your torch at the forefront of lighting technology.

Regulation
Wolf Eyes torches are regulated, meaning they don't dim or lose intensity like many other torches including other LED torches. The regulation has two advantages, it means the power to the LED is consistent, so the LED will be running at it's optimum with the battery being boosted as it is being depleted, the second advantage is you don't overboost the LED which can permanently damage it, this happens with torches not designed for rechargeable batteries or accumulators. Of the 2 hours 20 minutes runtime of high intensity light this torch is capable of, the first 1 hour and 50 minutes is regulated, with a slight dimming in the last 1/2 hour.
Australian Approved Charger
The Wolf Eyes Sniper 260 LED Tactical Torch comes complete with rechargeable battery and Australian approved charger. We have noticed a number of torches on the Australian market with non approved chargers. The advantage of an Australian approved charger is that it is both safe and legal to connect to an Australian power supply, meaning it meets OH&S requirements and also your insurance is ok in a residential or business situation.
Rechargeable Batteries
The battery utilised in the Sniper is the LRB168A (18650) rechargeable lithium ion battery. Utilised predominantly in notebooks, this battery provides large outputs (including rapid discharge high amp outputs) from a relatively compact package. So powerful is this battery that it powers the Tesla Roadster electric car (an electric car built on a Lotus Elise chassis with a 0-100kmh time of 3.9 seconds). One huge advantage of the Wolf Eyes Sniper flashlight is that it has been built with these rechargeables in mind, rather than disposable CR123 batteries (which cost $10 each in shops in Aus). This means we can use the 18mm versions of the batteries which are 50% more powerful than the 17mm versions. Torches or flashlights designed to only fit CR123 batteries, such as the Surefire 6P or Surefire G2 (in fact most of the Surefire line) can only fit the 17mm version (available in our recharge kit), which means 2/3rds the power.
All Wolf Eyes batteries are protected, meaning they have a small computer chip built in to one end, this controls charging and discharging, designed to reduce the risks of powerful batteries. We have seen lithium ion batteries explode and would never sell an unprotected version.
As many are aware, most police departments in Australia or the Australian Defence Force do not generally supply batteries for their staff. So a rechargeable torch (or rechargeable flashlight, depending on your terminology) is both an environmentally sound decision but also an economic necessity. Some police officers have reported that their rechargeable torch has paid for itself in as little as 3 months when compared to their previous CR123 battery older style torch. With our rechargeable batteries you can top up at any time, no need to wait for the battery to run down, so you are always prepared for that critical mission.
Environmentally, rechargeable batteries are a winner. Like most quality lithium ion batteries, our rechargeable batteries are rated for 1,000 recharges under ideal conditions. Even if you took 500 recharges as a reasonable figure, each rechargeable battery you use would save 2,000 AAA batteries, 1,500 C cell batteries or 1, 000 CR123 batteries from landfill, a wothwhile saving (based on a 2 x CR123, 3 x C cell or 4 x AAA torch providing similar runtime). Even if the environment isn't your priority when purchasing a torch or flashlight, the financial saving is huge and as a bonus you get to feel good about the environment.
Cold Weather Performance
One of the huge advantages of rechargeable lithium ion batteries, besides their huge outputs, is the ability to operate in colder temperatures. Many have been frustrated by the loss of power in AA and NiMh batteries in cold temperatures. That is not a problem with Lithium Ion. To take the photos here, we turned a torch onto low, placed it in a tray of water in a freezer for 4 days till the water became an ice cube, then removed and photographed. The torch was on for the 4 full days in the freezer!
